21st century

Sorry folks, this "blog" actually serves as a kind of notebook for moi, especially lately at the top. For my ideas in general you might try the third post down from the top entitled "Intro." In its early days I was hoping to turn on the comment feature, but I never found the time to figure out how to do so.

We have arrived where the scenario commences. Seems, with enough hard hearts, courses of events on a broad scale become inevitable. But if many, many humans give "the other" more attention, then perhaps the force emerging from smaller scale situations may effect a large scale swerve from determinacy.

"Most of the time the work to keep the good spirit alive is done individually, but once in a while it transforms into a group effort." Arlo Guthrie
https://www.facebook.com/arloguthrie/posts/10154626464610195

10/20 "There are lots of small rebel groups in the hinterlands of Homs, Hama and Aleppo and in Idlib province who are not al-Qaeda. But most have become hard line Salafis a la Saudi Arabia who want sharia law and allow as how they might not kill all the Alawis, Christians, Druze and other minorities that come under their rule but keep them as second class citizens under a dictatorship. Some are still Muslim Brotherhood, some of whom want a Muslim state but with elections.

"However, these groups are small and not very effective fighters, and have been forced to ally with al-Qaeda to avoid being killed by the Syrian Arab Army and in hopes of taking more territory. Moreover, the amount of Syrian territory now held by rebels who want democratic elections and full legal equality for all Syrians would be in my estimation zero percent..."

Just who are they saying are the moderates? (it's the fog of war, people)

10/3 "Despite the squawking from the likes of Sen. John McCain, Russia mainly hit al-Qaeda in Syria and groups closely allied with it such as Ahrar al-Sham (Freemen of Syria) and  Suqour al-Jabal  (Mountain Eagles)–which allied with al-Qaeda in an Aleppo campaign this last summer. Russia also may have hit some small independent groups left over from the old, collapsed Free Syrian Army along with these bigger targets.

"Radio Free Europe reported, 'The areas in northern Homs Province reportedly targeted by the Russian air strikes are controlled by a number of Syrian rebel groups — including the Free Syrian Army (FSA), as well as Syria’s Al-Qaeda affiliate, Jabhat al-Nusra (Al-Nusra Front), and hard-line Islamist rebel group Ahrar al-Sham, according to activists, locals, and experts.'

"The Russias also hit Talbisa. RFE says “The U.S.-based think tank the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that the rebel-held town of Talbisah is controlled by the Nusra Front, Ahrar al-Sham, and a number of other local rebel groups.” In other words, the Russians hit the Nusra Front/ al-Qaeda and its allies.

"The fact is that the United States has  bombed the Support Front/ al-Qaeda on several occasions, itself, so it is odd to criticize Russia for that. As for the others, if they are al-Qaeda allies sitting with al-Qaeda operatives they seem fair game for bombing...

Could be that folks who feel the grief most at these times feel compelled to speak out about our conflicted policy. There's a cost to speaking out. Among progressives it's ok to blast Bush right now; many have arguments against the '03 war down pat. But distracting "mainstream" items and short attention spans arrest interest in how the blunders go on under Obama. Some can put 2 and 2 together just standing on the sidelines, but apparently with our media it takes a moderate attention span simply to find a way to the sidelines. Patrick Cockburn had a point of view 15 months ago that hasn't simply been forgotten...that point of view was never even ACKNOWLEDGED or encountered by mainstream media...hence by most Americans.

Aug 2014 "There are extraordinary elements in the present U.S. policy in Iraq and Syria that are attracting surprisingly little attention. In Iraq, the U.S. is carrying out air strikes and sending in advisers and trainers to help beat back the advance of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (better known as ISIS) on the Kurdish capital, Erbil. The U.S. would presumably do the same if ISIS surrounds or attacks Baghdad. But in Syria, Washington’s policy is the exact opposite: there the main opponent of ISIS is the Syrian government and the Syrian Kurds in their northern enclaves. Both are under attack from ISIS, which has taken about a third of the country, including most of its oil and gas production facilities.

"But U.S., Western European, Saudi, and Arab Gulf policy is to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad, which happens to be the policy of ISIS and other jihadis in Syria. If Assad goes, then ISIS will be the beneficiary, since it is either defeating or absorbing the rest of the Syrian armed opposition..." See second link below

All we're told now is that Putin's tyrant for supporting Assad. Follow Patrick Cockburn, folks.

rsial piece claiming that Turkish intelligence had armed Jabhat al-Nusra with Sarin, citing a combination of news reports of Syrians detained in Turkey near the border with Sarin and anonymous government and intelligence officials (17). Hersh also claims that the US made a “rat line” to move weapons seized in Libya through southern Turkey to Syrian rebels fighting against Assad.
It must also be mentioned that ISIS has been very successful smuggling oil through Turkey, something that opposition MP Ali Ediboğlu insists the Turkish state must know about (22). This ironically parallels the silent cooperation of the Assad Regime, which also is knowingly part of a chain where it receives oil from ISIS through a middleman named George Haswani (23). ISIS also profits handsomely from smuggling of looted antiquities through Turkey (24), and the total trade between Turkey and ISIS-controlled areas has gone up while Turkey’s total trade with Syria has been badly hit by the war (25). It is thus clear that ISIS’ finances could not be what they are without this quiet cooperation by both Turkey and Syria. https://historyxisis.wordpress.com/2015/07/27/syria-isis-and-kurds-turkeys-changing-positions-in-a-region-of-uncertainties/

Members of it seems are manpower sources for Daesh as they defect (three links below). It seems there could be a logic for drying up these swamps first. If Turkey would prohibit the influx of volunteers, wouldn't that sort of round out the latter approach?

"There is little doubt that any special training given Syrian Sunnis by the US will be acquired by members of al-Qaeda affiliates for use against the US. It will be acquired because out on the battlefield US-trained moderates will be de facto allies of ISIS, and so will need the latter and will fight alongside them, sharing techniques. It will also be acquired when the moderates defect to the al-Qaeda affiliates." Juan Cole, June '14, http://www.juancole.com/2014/06/moderate-fighters-quixotic.html

"1. The Sunni Syrian fighters are not all that wedded to a particular ideology. Several important groups originally operating as part of the pro-Western Free Syrian Army  defected to the al-Qaeda affiliates last September,  apparently mainly because the latter pay better. That is, the assumption that there are essential or perduring 'moderates' is incorrect. Guerrillas need resources and admire winners, so groups with more resources that have more victories will pick up allies over time even if they are horrible groups." http://www.juancole.com/2014/06/moderate-fighters-quixotic.html

to make it sound better for guitar.  This is the way the song goes in my
